Cubiscape – core gameplay

This is the first post in a series i plan to write about making my latest Android game. The first thing I want to write about are the elements of the core gameplay – how the game works and why I designed it that way.

If you haven’t checked out the game yet let me quickly describe it to you. Cubiscape is a puzzle game where in each level your goal is to get the blue ball to the exit (marked with a green tile). A picture is worth a thousand words, so here is a screenshot of one such level:

You can see the blue ball being chased by the red cube. The game is turn based, so each round both the ball and the cube can move by one tile. In this case, the player (in the role of the ball) wins easily. But we are not here to discuss the solutions to particular levels, but rather how the game works.

Finishing a project

Have you ever started a project that you were really excited about, but then never finished it? Maybe you hit an obstacle that you were not able to overcome, had more important things to attend to or you simply got bored by it and moved on to something else. This happens to me all too often so I’m happy that I managed to finally finish my latest project (Cubiscape).

It took me over four months from the first time I came up with the idea to actually releasing a complete game on Google Play. I had a few weeks during those four months where I did barely anything – I was too busy at work. And of course there were moments where I almost gave up. Looking back at how the game shaped up to what it is now, there were a few things that I would like to point out:

Cubiscape release this Sunday!

After four months of hard work I have finally decided that it is time to release my first ever Android game! It’s called Cubiscape – if you guessed that the goal of the game is to escape from evil cubes, then you guessed right 🙂

The release will happen this Sunday (12th February 2017). I will update this post with a link to the game on Google Play. Meanwhile, you can check out this teaser screenshot:
